Quality Education for Children in East Africa

2009 = Positive. Sustainable. Change.

The successes accomplished in 2009, and since the inception of the Asante Africa Foundation, are due to your generosity, your support, and your belief that education is the foundation of sustainable change. Generous contributions from you fund projects that bring opportunity, choice, and possibility to African children. Together with you, our supporters and donors, we celebrate the achievements of 2009.

Children We provided...
merit based scholarships.104 scholarships to students, who might not otherwise have an opportunity for education, entered the 2010 school year. An additional 40 children also received day school support (uniforms, supplies, food).

Classroom materials We delivered...
over 8000 textbooks to classrooms. Over 4000 pounds of reading books and teaching materials were carried in duffle bags across the ocean by our volunteers to teachers throughout Tanzania and Kenya.

Safe places to learn We built...
safer and healthier learning environments for students. Your donations helped to provide over 35 classrooms, 55 toliets/latrines, 8 water tanks, and 3 kitchens. Such facilities enable children to focus on learning and not on being hungry or walking for hours to collect water.

Teamwork We strengthened...
our international team. We added talented leaders to our Tanzanian and Kenyan advisory boards from within those countries. We hired Gathii Kanyi, a full time program manager in Kenya, to manage the partnerships, school projects, and student scholarships. Gathii joined Propser Msafiri, our program manager in Tanzania.

School furniture We partnered...
US-based schools with East African schools. A 5th grade class at a school in San Francisco raised funds for a new classroom in Kenya with 70 new desks for 210 students. An elementary school in Redwood City raised money for the furniture and desks for a new school in Kenya that opened in Winter 2009. And a group of high school students raised $600 for school supplies and teaching materials.

Teamwork We planned...
for the future. In August 2009, program managers, board members, and senior advisors from Tanzania, Kenya, and the US met together to create a multi-year strategic plan and review our programs. Where we were doing well, we committed to forge ahead. Where we need to improve, we created solutions. Where we needed to grow, we discussed how to leverage others’ expertise and knowledge.

Fall Event We celebrated...
together. In Fall 2009, a sold-out house of all ages enjoyed an African family-style feast, live African music, and video presentations of our students telling us first-hand of the impact of education in their lives. We celebrated 3 years of past achievements and talked about future dreams for schools, teachers, and students who will be the next generation of global leaders.

We changed lives...
in 2009. Across 2 countries, 9 regions, in 15 partnership schools, with over 100 scholarships, we changed lives—one school at a time, one student at a time. More than 13,000 children’s lives were changed in 2009 because of your support and commitment.

And in 2010...
a great many things still to be done, and even greater things yet to come.
