Celebrating World Water Day

water day

Did you know 85% of the world population lives in the driest half of the planet? In fact, 783 million people do not have access to clean water and nearly 2.5 billion do not have access to proper sanitation. See more world water facts and photos.

ation looks back at the water and education project for the Nchaishi Community in Kenya. It was last fall when an American group of Rotarians and Asante Africa Foundation BOD members witnessed the sheer joy and happiness of a deeply rural Maasai community who experienced clean, clear water for the first time along with new and safer classrooms for the students. As a joint project between six Rotary Clubs in the USA, two Rotary Clubs in Kenya and Asante Africa Foundation, this was a journey that took two years and $60,000 to bring the community and school of Nchaishi, a water borehole, a pump and two bigger classrooms.

The launch of the water borehole brought tremendous joy to the whole community. It was seen as a “miracle” like bringing “Rain from underground,” as one elated elder of the community exclaimed. The water borehole has made it easier for women to get access to clean water, while serving as a good water resource for animals to quench their thirst. Also, the headmaster of Nchaishi Primary school was beyond ecstatic because his school finally got access to clean water for drinking, preparing meals and for cleaning. The excitement the water borehole brought was followed by a ceremony to mark the beginning of a new chapter; water for life.

It’s moments like this that reveal the power of how a global partnership, from the local community to the Rotary Clubs that can help provide access to water resources and education. It was a proud moment for Asante Africa Foundation to have been a part of this journey.
