World Storytelling Day: Sharing Stories of Girls’ Empowerment in East Africa

Mar 9, 2026

Every story has the power to inspire change. On World Storytelling Day, celebrated each year around March 20, people across the globe come together to share stories that connect communities, cultures, and generations.

For organizations like Asante Africa Foundation, storytelling is more than an art form. It is a way to highlight resilience, celebrate progress, and amplify the voices of girls whose lives have been transformed through education and empowerment.

As we mark International Storytelling Day, we are reminded that behind every statistic is a powerful story waiting to be heard.

Why Stories Matter in the Fight for Girls’ Education

Across East Africa, millions of girls face barriers that limit their access to education and opportunities. Poverty, early marriage, gender-based violence, and lack of resources can prevent girls from staying in school and pursuing their dreams.

Yet, when girls receive the support they need – education, mentorship, and life skills training, their stories change dramatically.

Many of the young women in Asante Africa programs begin their journeys quietly, unsure of their potential. But through mentorship, leadership training, and community support, they discover their voices.

Programs like the Wezesha Vijana Program, whose name means “Empower Youth” in Swahili, equip girls with leadership skills, reproductive health knowledge, financial literacy, and the confidence to advocate for themselves and their communities.

Through workshops and youth-led initiatives, girls learn not only how to stay in school but also how to lead.

For example, students participating in youth entrepreneurship programs often launch small community projects – from agricultural ventures to small businesses that help fund their education and inspire others around them.

These experiences transform young people into changemakers whose stories inspire entire communities.

Stories That Inspire Communities:

Sharon’s Story: From Hardship to a Career in Healthcare

Sharon grew up in Kenya surrounded by significant challenges, including illness in her family and limited financial resources. Watching her loved ones struggle to access healthcare inspired her dream of working in the medical field. However, the cost of education made this goal seem out of reach.

Through determination and persistence, Sharon applied for a scholarship with the Asante Africa Foundation. With this support, she was able to continue her education and participate in youth leadership programs and summits that strengthened her skills in entrepreneurship, personal development, and financial management.

Today, Sharon is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Midwifery. Alongside her studies, she runs a small shoe-selling business to support herself. Her journey shows how education and mentorship can transform adversity into opportunity.

Jalia, a 13-year-old girl from Uganda, attended school barefoot because her family could not afford basic supplies. Despite these challenges, she remained determined to continue her education.

During an Asante Africa Foundation training session on financial literacy and saving, Jalia learned practical skills that empowered her to set goals and manage money. Inspired by the lesson, she began saving small amounts until she could finally buy her own pair of school shoes.

While the achievement might seem simple, it represented something much larger – confidence, independence, and the ability to shape her own future. Jalia’s story highlights how life skills education can empower young girls to overcome obstacles and stay in school.

Through leadership training and mentorship programs, Florence gained the skills and confidence to become an advocate for youth empowerment in her community.

Over time, Florence transitioned from being a student participant to a leader working directly with youth development initiatives. She now helps guide programs that empower young people—especially girls—to build leadership skills, embrace digital learning, and take action on community challenges such as climate change and education access.

Florence’s journey demonstrates how empowering one young woman can create a ripple effect of leadership that benefits entire communities.

Sharing Stories That Change the World

On World Storytelling Day, we invite you to listen, learn, and share the stories of girls whose determination is transforming communities across East Africa.

Because when one girl’s story changes, the future changes with it.

By supporting programs that educate and empower girls, you help write the next chapter in a story of resilience, leadership, and hope.

And together, through the power of storytelling, we can ensure that the voices of empowered girls continue to be heard—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
