Walking 17 Kilometres for a Dream
Sep 24, 2026
Julius is the fourth-born in a family of eight children, growing up in a home filled with love, determination, and financial hardship.
His father works as a casual labourer on other people’s farms, earning between 30,000–40,000/= per month. He also grows maize, beans, and Irish potatoes on a small scale to supplement the family’s income. But with eight children to support and a wife living with diabetes who requires ongoing care, every shilling is stretched to meet the family’s needs.
For Julius, education has always represented something more: a pathway toward a different future. An academically capable student with dreams of becoming a medical doctor, he is driven by a desire to help others and one day improve life for his family.
But pursuing that dream came at a tremendous cost.
Every school day, Julius walked 17 kilometres to and from school—a journey of approximately 340 kilometres every month. His father could not afford boarding fees, leaving Julius to make the long trek on foot simply to attend class.
Imagine walking that distance day after day, before and after a full day of learning, and still finding the determination to study, dream, and keep moving forward.
For Julius, this was not an occasional sacrifice. It was the reality of pursuing an education when financial circumstances placed opportunity out of reach.
A Scholarship That Changes More Than School
That reality is now changing.
Julius has been awarded a scholarship from Asante Africa Foundation covering his school fees, boarding, scholastic materials, and pocket money. This support is doing more than easing his family’s financial burden—it is giving Julius the time, energy, and stability to focus on his education.
He no longer has to measure his school day against the kilometres waiting for him on the road home. Instead, he can direct that energy toward his studies and the dream he has carried for years.
For Julius, a scholarship is not simply assistance with school expenses. It is an investment in the possibility of a future that once demanded extraordinary sacrifice just to reach the classroom.
With renewed hope and determination, Julius is ready to pursue academic excellence and work toward becoming a medical doctor—someone who can uplift his family and serve his community.
His story reminds us that talent and ambition exist everywhere, but opportunity does not. Sometimes, the difference between a young person struggling to stay in school and one able to reach their full potential is the support that meets them at the moment they need it most.
Thanks to Asante Africa Foundation and its generous donors, Julius can spend less time walking toward an education and more time building the future that education makes possible.
