Asante Africa’s Top Initiatives Supporting Women and Technology in Africa

Through hands-on training, access to digital tools, and leadership development, we’re empowering women to lead and innovate. Empowering Communities Through Digital Access
At St. Gorreti Manyogasekka Primary School in Uganda, the lack of electricity once stood as a significant barrier to digital literacy and education. Without access to basic infrastructure, opportunities for students and teachers to engage with the transformative power of technology were severely limited. This gap highlighted a broader challenge faced across Africa: how to provide communities with the tools they need to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by women and technology.
Change began when Asante Africa Foundation partnered with the school to provide a digital start-up kit, including devices and resources designed to introduce students and teachers to the basics of technology. However, without electricity, even this critical equipment couldn’t be used. Understanding the importance of collective action, Asante Africa launched a parental engagement initiative, empowering families to take an active role in the school’s progress.
Parents pledged 5,000 Uganda Shillings each, eventually raising enough funds to electrify the school. Once the electricity was installed, the start-up kit came to life. Teachers received training on how to incorporate digital tools into their lessons, enabling them to introduce students to critical skills like computer literacy. For many students, this was their first interaction with technology, sparking curiosity and opening the door to opportunities they had never imagined.
The ripple effects have been transformative. Teachers now serve as digital literacy champions, and students are gaining skills that will prepare them for a tech-driven future. Beyond the classroom, the community feels the impact of empowered women and technology as mothers and female educators take active roles in driving the school’s progress. St. Gorreti Manyogasekka Primary School is now a beacon of what can be achieved when technology, community collaboration, and a commitment to education come together.
Equipping Educators for a Digital Future
In Tanzania, teachers and students face significant obstacles in education, from the scarcity of digital tools to language barriers that complicate the transition from Swahili to English in upper grades. These challenges not only hinder students’ ability to learn but also place an overwhelming burden on teachers, many of whom lack access to the resources and training needed to adapt to a rapidly digitizing world. Recognizing this need, Asante Africa launched an initiative to train educators on the effective use of Chromebooks in the classroom, equipping them with the skills and tools to transform their teaching methods.
Over the summer, this program reached 10 rural schools across Tanzania, empowering 82 teachers and one ward education officer in Lushoto. The training sessions introduced educators to tools that would enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, including how to develop exam questions, input and analyze data, prepare results, and write reports—all critical tasks in modern education. For many participants, this was their first experience using digital devices for professional purposes, and their enthusiasm during the sessions was palpable.
The results have been transformative. Teachers reported significant improvements in their confidence and competence, with one participant, Joyce Mbwambo, the Head of Mbwei Primary School, sharing her excitement:
“We did not have a single device before, making it challenging to perform tasks such as typing, preparing results, creating exams, or sending government reports. However, now we will be using Chromebooks extensively for improving our processes and teaching techniques. Now we have the tools and the knowledge to use them. I am ready to lead my fellow teachers in utilizing these Chromebooks.”
The students have also felt the impact of this initiative, with many being exposed to modern learning tools for the first time. Teachers noted the excitement among students as classrooms became more interactive and engaging through the use of technology.
This successful program is now set to expand to the Monduli and Kilimanjaro regions, ensuring that even more educators and students benefit from these advancements. By empowering teachers with the skills to harness technology, Asante Africa is not only improving classroom experiences but also paving the way for a generation of tech-savvy learners ready to thrive in a digital future.
Bridging the Gender Gap Through Digital Apprenticeships
Asante Africa Foundation’s Digital Employability and Entrepreneurship Program (DEEP) is designed to equip young people with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy. Through a combination of intensive training, mentorship, and hands-on projects, DEEP provides participants with globally recognized certifications and practical experience in fields like software development, hardware maintenance, and entrepreneurship. The program addresses the persistent gender gap in technology, empowering women to lead and contribute meaningfully in male-dominated fields.
Bridget is a brilliant example of what DEEP can achieve. A young single mother at just 16, Bridget faced significant challenges, including limited opportunities and societal barriers. In 2021, she joined the inaugural cohort of DEEP apprentices, determined to carve out a better future for herself and her child. Over the course of her training, Bridget excelled, earning a qualification in software development and gaining valuable experience in education technology.
Today, Bridget is not only thriving professionally but also giving back to her community. As an associate facilitator for Akira Chix, an enterprise dedicated to closing the gender gap in tech by training women in market-relevant skills, Bridget helps other women gain the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in technology. Her role demonstrates how programs like DEEP create a ripple effect, where one empowered woman becomes a leader and mentor for many others.
