How a Ugandan Community Made Digital Literacy Possible
St. Gorreti Manyogasekka Primary School has been an education center since 1974. Originally founded as a church school and later managed by the government from 1986, this rural institution has faced persistent challenges—among them, the absence of electricity. For years, students and staff have persevered without the benefits that come with access to digital educational tools. This changed thanks to Asante Africa Foundation’s dedication to expanding digital literacy and empowering communities with crucial resources.
In partnership with Asante Africa, the school received a digital start-up kit, complete with devices that would introduce the community to technology for students and teachers alike. However, without electricity, this valuable equipment could not be utilized, and digital literacy remained out of reach. Recognizing this, Asante Africa Foundation launched a parental engagement initiative to bring the vision of a digitally equipped school to life. The strategy was to involve the community deeply in the effort to bring electricity to St. Gorreti, giving parents a sense of ownership over their children’s futures.
During the first term, parents, understanding the potential impact of digital education, committed to contributing financially. Families pledged 5,000 Uganda Shillings to help cover the 900,000 UGX needed to electrify the school. Initial contributions raised 300,000 UGX, which motivated Asante Africa Foundation to return for a second round of discussions, reinforcing the importance of community support and their children’s digital future.
Through continued parental support and collective efforts, the remaining funds were raised, and electricity was installed at the school by mid-year. With this achievement, St. Gorreti is now fully equipped to activate the digital start-up kit, bringing technology into daily lessons and introducing students to essential computer skills. Teachers have received training to help integrate digital tools into the curriculum, ensuring that students gain not only familiarity with devices but also critical digital literacy skills that will serve them for years to come.
St. Gorreti Manyogasekka Primary School stands as an amazing example as to what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared goal. With the collective effort of the community, they serve not only themselves but future generations. Thanks to the dedication of parents, staff, and the support of Asante Africa Foundation students and community members alike are empowered to continue their progress towards the success of their future.
