Finding Her Voice, Becoming a Leader

Oct 30, 2026

Winning the position of Head Girl was a milestone for Zaina, but her journey began earlier, when she joined Asante Africa’s School-Based Club (SBC). What began as an extracurricular experience gradually became a process of self-discovery, helping Zaina build confidence, find her voice, and develop the courage to lead.

When Zaina first joined the School-Based Club, she was eager to participate, but her lack of confidence held her back from stepping forward and taking on leadership responsibilities. Through club activities, discussions, teamwork, and opportunities to express herself, she gradually found her voice. With each experience, Zaina became more confident speaking up, sharing her ideas, and working with others, laying the foundation for her growth as a leader.

As Zaina grew more confident, her understanding of leadership also began to change. She learned that leadership goes beyond holding a position. It takes the courage to take initiative, the willingness to listen to others and work as a team, and the commitment to inspire positive change.

Building on the lessons she had learned through the School-Based Club, Zaina took a bold step and ran for Head Girl at her school. She put herself forward, believing in her ability to lead her fellow students, and her courage paid off when she won the election.

Looking back, Zaina recognizes the School-Based Club as an important part of her leadership journey. In her own words:

“The program helped me to become confident and taught me leadership skills. Before joining the club, I was not confident enough to stand in front of others and express myself. Through the activities, I learned how to communicate, work with others, and take responsibility. This gave me the courage to run for Head Girl, and I won.”

Today, Zaina serves as Head Girl with a renewed sense of purpose. Her journey shows how safe and supportive school environments can help students overcome self-doubt and discover their potential as leaders.

Zaina’s story is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when young people are given the space and support to speak up, collaborate, and take initiative. Through its School-Based Clubs, Asante Africa helps create these opportunities, empowering students to recognize their ability to lead and create positive change, not only in their schools but also in their communities.
