From Passion to Pride: How I Turned My Craft into a Business

Jun 2, 2025

My name is Anna, a 20-year-old entrepreneur from Irente View, Lushoto, Tanzania. I’m the proud owner of The Artisan Hut, a small shop where I sell handmade cultural items—beaded jewelry, kitenge fabrics, kikoi wraps, traditional paintings, and custom art for tourists. But a few years ago, I was just a young woman with a dream, unsure how to turn it into reality.

That changed when I joined the Digital Employability and Entrepreneurship Program (DEEP) by Asante Africa Foundation. Before DEEP, I had a passion for art but lacked the skills and knowledge to build a business. DEEP taught me practical tools—how to structure my sales, manage finances, and use digital marketing to connect with customers. Now, I use my phone and platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram to showcase my work, take orders, and engage with customers—even before they arrive in town!

Starting The Artisan Hut wasn’t easy, but I learned to make the most of what I had. With just a small starting capital (about $270), I covered my rent and materials and opened my shop. Since then, I’ve grown steadily, and during peak tourist season, I can earn around $40 a month. It’s not just about the money—it’s about sharing my culture, creating something with my own hands, and building a future for myself.

DEEP opened my eyes to the power of business. I’ve learned how to price my products, deliver excellent customer service, and think long-term. It’s made me proud, confident, and determined. I hope more young people, especially girls, get the chance to learn what I did—how to turn a small passion into a source of pride and independence.

I’m grateful to Asante Africa Foundation for giving me the tools to create my own path. Without them, I might still be waiting for an opportunity instead of building one for myself. I encourage them to keep empowering young people—because with the right support, we can do so much more than we ever imagined.
