Monica’s Journey from High School Student to Young Entrepreneur

MonicaMy Story

My name is Monica, and I am a student at Uhuru Girls High School. Alongside my studies, I am also a vegetable vendor, a path that began during a challenging time for my family. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my mum lost her job and decided to start a grocery business to support us. I helped her with the business until I joined high school, which ignited my passion for entrepreneurship.

My best friend and classmate in school is an Asante Africa Foundation alumna. She often shared with me what she learned about entrepreneurship, furthering my dream and inspiring me to start my own grocery business. I bought my first stock of vegetables and fruits with a capital of 1000 shillings, which I had saved from my pocket money. Today, my business is thriving and has been operational for a year.

As a current member of Asante Africa’s Youth Livelihood Program (YLP), I have consistently learned new skills that have significantly improved my business. When I return to school, I always leave my business under the care of my sister, ensuring its continuity.

Despite facing challenges such as goods going bad sometimes, I still muster the courage to move forward. Additionally, I use my talent for making ornaments like bangles and necklaces as a backup plan for my business. This creative endeavor not only supports my primary business but allows me to explore another passion.

I have a dream of developing and expanding my business further. With the skills and knowledge gained from YLP, I am confident that I can overcome any obstacles and achieve my goals.

Impact on Young Africans

My journey is a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of young Africans. By turning a challenging situation into an opportunity, I have not only supported my family but also inspired others in my community. My story highlights the importance of entrepreneurship education and mentorship, demonstrating how programs like YLP can empower young people to pursue their dreams and contribute to their communities.

As I continue to grow my business and develop my skills, I hope to encourage other young Africans to embrace entrepreneurship and create positive change in their lives and communities. By sharing my experiences, I aim to show that with determination, creativity, and the right support, it is possible to overcome challenges and build a successful future.
