Sharon’s Journey: Inspiring Change in STEM and Healthcare

Feb 3, 2025

In the heart of Kisumu, Kenya, Sharon’s story unfolds – a tale of resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to transforming lives through science and healthcare. As a third-year university nursing and midwifery student, Sharon’s journey is not just about pursuing a degree; it’s about breaking barriers, inspiring young girls, and creating a ripple effect of change in her community.

Sharon’s passion for nursing was born out of a deeply personal experience. In 2011, her mother fell critically ill during a nationwide doctors’ and nurses’ strike. The lack of accessible healthcare left her family in despair, and young Sharon vowed to make a difference.

“I wanted to be the person who could step in and help when no one else could,” she recalls.

This moment, coupled with the Ebola outbreak that swept through Africa, ignited her interest in the medical field. She dreamed of contributing to research and innovation to combat such diseases and improve healthcare outcomes for her community.

Even as a student, Sharon was already making a difference. Her clinical rotations saw her leading cervical cancer screening initiatives, educating others on early detection and HPV vaccination. For Sharon, empowering women to take control of their health, especially those vulnerable to the disease, was the most rewarding experience.

But Sharon’s journey has not been without challenges. Limited resources, financial constraints, and the emotional toll of losing patients have tested her resolve. Yet, she has always found a way to persevere.

I seek mentorship from successful women in nursing, use online resources to supplement my studies, and practice effective time management,” she shares.

Her determination to overcome these obstacles is a testament to her strength and dedication. And beyond her academic pursuits, Sharon is a peer counselor, collaborating with various university clubs to support students struggling with mental health.

My typical day is filled with learning and engaging with fellow medical students to solve healthcare challenges,” she says.

Her leadership skills, honed through high school and beyond, have made her a beacon of hope for her peers.

Sharon envisioned a future where women in STEM had the support and mentorship they needed to flourish. She dreamed of groundbreaking healthcare innovations that would save lives and improve patient outcomes.

To young girls aspiring to enter STEM fields, Sharon has a powerful message:

“The world needs intelligent and innovative women in STEM. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who believe in your dreams.”

She also calls on parents and communities to support girls in STEM by providing resources, education, and motivation. Sharon’s favorite quote by Maya Angelou resonates deeply with her journey: “They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” This philosophy drives her every action, from patient care to community outreach.

As we celebrate Sharon’s story on this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are reminded of the transformative power of education, mentorship, and unwavering determination. Sharon’s journey is a testament to the impact one individual can have when given the opportunity to shine.

Through the support of organizations like Asante Africa Foundation, young women like Sharon are breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations in STEM. Her story is not just an inspiration – it’s a call to action for all of us to invest in the dreams of young girls and women, ensuring they have the tools to succeed and the support to thrive.

Sharon’s journey is far from over, but one thing is certain: she is a force to be reckoned with, and her impact will be felt for generations to come.
