Paving the Way to a Greener Future
At a time when youth unemployment and environmental challenges continue to affect communities across Uganda, Asante Africa Foundation’s Youth Livelihood Program (YLP) is demonstrating what’s possible when young people are equipped with the right skills and support. Through hands-on learning and mentorship, youth are not only building their own futures—they are creating solutions to real-world challenges.
One powerful example is Mityana Plastic Pavers, a group of five in-school students whose journey began in YLP school clubs and the Enterprise Challenge Program. There, they developed practical skills in entrepreneurship, innovation, and problem-solving. What started as a classroom experience quickly grew into something much bigger.
During the national Enterprise Challenge competitions, the group stood out for their creativity and commitment to addressing plastic waste in their community. Their idea—transforming discarded plastic into durable pavers—earned them recognition and seed funding, marking their transition from learners to young entrepreneurs.
With training and support, the team brought their idea to life. They began collecting plastic waste, processing it, and producing high-quality pavers—tackling environmental pollution while building a sustainable business. Their first major project was transforming their school library compound into a clean, durable, and environmentally friendly space. The impact was immediate and visible, inspiring pride across the school and community.
Buoyed by this success, the group expanded from small-scale production to commercial sales. Today, Mityana Plastic Pavers produces and sells pavers locally, generating income and laying the groundwork for future growth. While still growing, their enterprise is already demonstrating strong potential and sustainability.
Beyond income, the impact on the students themselves has been profound. They have developed leadership, teamwork, and business skills—and emerged as role models, championing environmental conservation and innovation. Their journey is inspiring other students to think creatively and engage in school-based programs.
This story is more than an enterprise—it’s a testament to the power of creativity and opportunity. Through programs like YLP, young people are gaining the confidence and capability to turn ideas into action. Mityana Plastic Pavers shows that when youth are trusted, trained, and supported, they can build not just businesses, but brighter, more sustainable futures for their communities.
