Oakland Based Non-Profit Earns Prestigious International Recognition

Oakland, CA — — Asante Africa Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to educating the children of East Africa, earned a spot on the prestigious shortlist for the 2017 Pan-Africa Awards. The Pan-African Awards honors the very best projects that are using enterprise and entrepreneurship to innovate in the field of education.

“The Pan-Africa Awards have a history of honoring amazing organizations and projects that are making strides to help improve education in Africa. Asante Africa Foundation is honored to be included on the shortlist for this award,” said Erna Grasz, Founder of Asante Africa Foundation. “We know that every child deserves access to a quality education. It is our goal that the next generation of African youth are ready to transform Africa and the world.”

Based in Oakland, California, Asante Africa Foundation began when Erna Grasz, a Silicon Valley executive, traveled to Tanzania and witnessed firsthand the desperate need to improve educational opportunities for the youth of Africa. Since 2007, Asante Africa Foundation has trained more than 11,000 teachers in East Africa; developed programs to keep nearly 360,000 students in school, particularly girls; and changed the future of 200+ African communities.

The 2017 Pan-Africa Awards received more than 480 applications from organizations working in Africa. Only the few projects that made the award’s shortlist are eligible to win one of the three top prizes. The awards are supported by The Saville Foundation, a charitable foundation based in South Africa and managed by the non-profit, Teach a Man To Fish.

“The Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education recognizes leading organizations benefitting young people through innovative and sustainable enterprise education programs,” said Nik Kafka, CEO and Founder of Teach a Man To Fish. “We were very impressed by our shortlisted organization’s programs and impact in the field of enterprise education. We also appreciated their focus on community empowerment and engaging local staff to create grassroots change.”

Asante Africa Foundation focuses their efforts on three programs aimed at providing children in Africa the opportunity to thrive in and out of the classroom. The programs are Girls Advancement, Leadership and Entrepreneurship Incubator (LEI) and Accelerated Learning in the Classroom. Each of these programs work to address the root causes of why youth are unsuccessful and create opportunities for the students to excel.

Asante Africa Foundation is unique in its ability to work within the existing educational system, alongside educators, influencers and governments. By partnering with existing schools and visionaries, Asante Africa Foundation is making sustainable changes that will continue to improve school retention, performance and make a difference.
