Youth Empowerment Through EducationThe things we love to see! It brings us great pleasure when we see our alumni realizing their dreams. Today’s spotlight is on Leakey, who has got our hearts bursting with joy! Do you remember Leakey? Let’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we?

About seven years ago, Leakey, a Kenyan from Maralal, joined the Asante Africa Foundation family to acquire some skills to improve upon his life. Coming from a humble home, Leakey did not have two nickels to rub together, however, with determination, as well as the financial and entrepreneurial knowledge he acquired from the Asante Africa programs, Leakey took baby steps to greatness. An empowered Leakey went on to become a successful entrepreneur (read more about Leakey’s small beginnings here), but the journey did not end there; he had even bigger dreams.

One of the guiding principles of Asante Africa Foundation is the concept of Paying it Forward, which encourages and supports all beneficiaries to give back to their community. Leakey upholds this philosophy to the core and is utilizing his knowledge and skills to serve his community. He has led a team of ten people to form a group called the Lare Oibor Youth Leadership Group, which was registered in 2022 and currently boasts of 15 members.

During his tenure, the team has offered numerous mentorship sessions to the youth in their community, teaching them leadership and entrepreneurial skills.

Moreover, the Group raises awareness on gender-related issues including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Gender Violence, in a bid to empower the people in their community. In recognition for his efforts in the community, Leakey was selected by the Samburu Anti-FGM Board, earlier this year, as a Facilitator. Through this position, Leakey has been able to reach  600 youths – 400 girls and 200 boys –  and is hoping to double his impact  in April 2024.

To An Even Bigger Dream

Despite being a successful entrepreneur, Leakey has had a long-held dream of becoming an accountant. Determined to achieve this dream, Leakey braced all odds and enrolled in an accounting program. Today, Leakey holds a diploma degree in accounting from the Adept College of Professional Studies and is a registered accountant. However, Leakey is still hungry for more success and is currently enrolled to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Youth Empowerment Through EducationHe believes that he can positively impact more lives as a qualified accountant and an entrepreneur, leaving no stones unturned in achieving his dreams.

Leakey is a visionary leader and remains an inspiration to the youth in Samburu and beyond. Asante Africa Foundation is happy to be part of his success story, and we will continue to support Leakey in any way possible. We wish him the very best in his quest to succeed and be a changemaker in his society.
