Not Even the Rain Can Stop Madam Juliet

Dec 6, 2023

At Ngamata Primary School, teacher Madam Juliet was elated to partner with Asante Africa’s Wezesha Vijana Program. Madam Juliet saw the program as an excellent opportunity for her students to build their confidence while learning about goal setting, personal care, and financial literacy. To implement the program at her school, Madam Juliet was provided with a projector, laptop, and tablets for her students. There was just one issue, Ngamata Primary school had no access to electricity. Madam Juliet would not let this massive obstacle stop her from enriching her students’ education.

Madam Juliet saw so much value in the Wezesha Vijana Program, and in teaching her students digital literacy, that she made the daily commitment to carry home the 12 tablets and 1 laptop on the back of her motorcycle so she could charge them. During that time in the evenings, she would plan for the next day’s sessions. Madam Juliet’s lesson preparations would often run late in the night, sometimes past midnight. The rainy season presented Madam Juliet with more challenges, often it would rain on her way home carrying the electronics. She then would be forced to seek shelter until the rain stopped, then push her motorcycle on the muddy and slippery road with the tablets on her back.

Eventually, an extension cord and HDMI cable was provided to Madam Juliet, and she felt so grateful for the convenience they offered. The Wezesha Vijana Program taught Madam Juliet the skills she needed to become digitally literate using the laptop and projector. Most of all, she is so happy and excited for the opportunity her students now have to use technology to learn necessary lessons about planning for their futures, caring for themselves, and making a positive impact on their community.
