Naitawang Youth Empowerment Addresses School Dropout Rates

On June 7 2024, Naitawang Youth Empowerment visited Nturumeti Secondary school for a mentorship and empowerment session focused on addressing early school dropouts. During this interactive session organization members engaged in meaningful discussions with the students, who shared various reasons contributing to early school dropouts. Some of these reasons can be attributed to health complications with students and families, poverty, early marriages and teen pregnancy, and even gender discrimination. The Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (FLANA) Report 2023 for Kenya shows that for school aged children, 6 to 15 years of age, 8.5% are out of school. The same report details that there is more children out of school today compared to previous years.This statistic underscores the urgent need for continued efforts and targeted interventions to keep Kenyan children in school and ensure they receive the education they deserve.

Together, Naitawang helped the students explore potential solutions, teaching them about sexual education, and the importance of education so that students can reach their full potential. In addition to the membership with the organization, Naitawang Youth Empowerment also provided sanitary towels to the girls, helping to keep them comfortable and secure in school.

As a bonus, the session also included a tree-planting event that was conducted as part of The Young Green Pioneers program, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation and encouraging students to become environmental stewards.
