The Power of Vegetables

Jul 10, 2023

In 2021, three students at Bukuya Secondary School began Asante Africa’s tailored Youth Livelihood Program, and consequently became equipped with invaluable skills and knowledge in entrepreneurship. The 15, 16, and 17-year-olds’ hunger for growth and development led them to the next chapter of their journey for self-sufficiency: the Enterprise Challenge, a program offered in partnership with Prince’s Trust International and Asante Africa Foundation. Under the guidance of the Enterprise Challenge program, these young entrepreneurs delved deeper into their entrepreneurial endeavors. They tackled teamwork exercises, where they discovered the power of collaboration and the synergy it could create. Leadership skills were nurtured, allowing each individual to unleash their full potential. The art of effective communication was also honed through various activities, including pitching their business ideas to peers and mentors.

Inspired and motivated, these bright minds set out to transform their dreams into reality. With a capital of Ugandan Shillings 85,000, carefully accumulated from their personal savings, they laid the foundation for their business, which they aptly named “Dealers in Green Vegetables.” They recognized the importance of financial prudence and decided to manage the business themselves, aiming to minimize expenses and maximize profitability. With their sights set on the future, the alumni envisioned expansion and diversification. With the profits from the business, they hope to expand to selling packaged goods alongside their fresh vegetables to cater to the evolving needs of their community. They aspire to acquire a larger piece of land, enabling them to cultivate a wider variety of plants and fulfill the increasing demand for vegetables.

The “Dealers in Green Vegetables” is a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurial education and youth empowerment. Through the students’ hard work, perseverance, and dedication to personal and community growth, these young entrepreneurs are not only sowing the seeds of their success but also nurturing a brighter future for themselves and their community.
