Student Success Story: Joseph’s Experience with an Open-Source Curriculum
Growing up in rural Meru, Kenya, Joseph attended a school without computer access. The first time he saw a computer was a Toshiba laptop his brother brought home from university, sparking Joseph’s passion for technology. Despite many challenges, including no electricity at home, Joseph was determined to learn more, often charging the laptop at a nearby school with a solar plant.
After high school, Joseph pursued Computer Science at the Technical University of Mombasa but had to drop out due to financial constraints. The course was also heavily theoretical, offering little practical experience.
Around this time, Joseph’s friend introduced him to Asante Africa’s Digital Employability and Entrepreneurship Program (DEEP). Here, Joseph learned hands-on skills using open-source content and global certification courses. This training allowed him to work on real-life projects, including developing HTML5 modules for Kenya’s National Curriculum.
With his newfound skills, Joseph built his first e-commerce site, which earned him a Tony Elumelu award. The invaluable experience led to his current role as Chief Technology Officer at a tech company, where he leads a team developing EdTech systems.
Today, Joseph dreams of building an African solar-powered data center to host and train AI models for education—a dream he believes is within reach, thanks to the opportunities and open-source curriculum provided by Asante Africa.

Kakungube’s Soap Business: A Case Study in Hard Work and Entrepreneurship
After learning essential skills in entrepreneurship, such as saving, budgeting, and market research, members of the YLP club at Kakungube Secondary School identified an unmet demand for liquid soap within their community. They didn’t just stop at identifying the opportunity; they took concrete steps to bring their idea to life.
The students devised a funding strategy, contributing 1,000 Ugandan Shillings each per week, and collectively raised 300,000 Ugandan Shillings to start their business. With this initial capital, they launched their liquid soap business, providing a much-needed product that not only improved hygiene within the school and the community but also generated income for the club.
The success of this business venture didn’t come easy. It required consistent effort, teamwork, and a commitment to growth. The students’ hard work paid off, resulting in a profit of 150,000 Ugandan Shillings, which they plan to reinvest to expand their business further. Their proactive approach, as well as their ongoing dedication to improving and growing their business, underscores the importance of fostering a culture of hard work among students.
This example from Kakungube Secondary School shows how students, when provided with the right tools and opportunities, can transform their hard work into tangible successes that benefit themselves and their communities.
